Barracuda are a seriously underrated gamefish and are tons of fun on light tackle. Barracuda have a hard time resisting just about any offering as long as they look alive. We don't usually target barracuda specifically but we catch plenty by setting live baits in different levels of the water column. After that they become pretty scarce. I've actually been able to target them on the second bar in the spring using small spoons and by live baiting small finger mullet. They are fun to catch and great eating. Occasionally you will get Great Barracuda inshore but I've never known anyone to have consistent catches of them in the Northern Gulf. – Although lures work well on barramundi, you still can’t beat bait, especially live bait. Small mullets caught with a cast net or small prawns or cherabin caught in opera house traps are the most popular live bait. When the going is tough and the barra aren’t feeding aggressively, live bait may be the only way to catch a barramundi.
